Google is railing against Apple as being the “big brother” they had warned us against. The one that controls everything. Now when you run that through the decrypter what they are really saying is “we are scared poopless iAd is going to take away another giant chunk of our revenue stream like Facebook Ads has.”
But Google has a MUCH bigger problem than iAds. It’s their business core – the search engine.
If I can harken back to the days of yore. In the old days you could type an error message generated by your computer into the Google search box and almost instantly get an answer. It was great and it’s probably why Google is where it is. Took seconds. Then as time passed by, this bastard company started popping up on page one with the question but you had to pay for the answer. And they were all over it. You eventually learned to ignore them but they clearly diluted the results you were looking for. Now it seems like more and more you get a wild mix of results from sites that have learned to game Google’s algorithms and not a genuine organic result of searching a sincere web vs. money grubbers and hacks.
What I’m trying to say is, that while Google is all excited about Nexus One, Google TV, Buzz, Wave etc. – their core product is in an apparent state of decay. This could be considered to be a part of the overall state of the web where much of it has become trickery ($300 Canon DSLR? Yeah right).
Regardless, if Google chases all these other pieces of tech and their tentpole tech tanks. What then? Ask Microsoft, who has managed to make themselves both ubiquitous and irrelevant somehow. They have to hopelessly hammer you with TV ads to tell you how cool they are and yet if you go in any store in my hometown to buy a computer you can’t NOT buy Windows 7 on the box you pick.
Google is accusing Apple of becoming big brother to cast them in the “evil” light after all Google’s motto is to not be evil but Apple is teflon in this area. They just don’t care. They are highly focused on making products and software people love. They have been very good at it. They are not going to change the formula as long as Jobs is at the helm.
Maybe Google should forget Apple and focus on making the Google search engine the best search engine it can possibly be. Maybe they should do that before people besides me start complaining and someone sees an opportunity. Maybe they should focus on ways to improve the reliability of when you pay for an ad you got exposure and not just another instance of Click Fraud.
Trust me, Google is worried about Apple being big brother NOT because they care about you, they are jealous that they may not be and that worries me a lot more than Apple’s wildly successful formula for doing business.
